Why do I have bad breath?
Persistent bad breath (Halitosis) or a bad taste in the mouth may be a warning sign of gum (periodontal) disease. Gum disease is caused by the buildup of plaque on teeth. Bacteria cause the formation of toxins, which irritate the gums. The medical condition dry mouth (also called xerostomia) also can cause bad breath.
How often should I visit my dentist?
The Canadian College of Dental Surgeons recommends seeing a dentist on average, twice a year. Others may need more frequent visits. During your routine exam, we will also provide a cancer screening and check for oral lesions. People with a high risk of dental disease might need to visit every three or four months. This high-risk group includes:
People with current gum disease
People with a weak immune response to bacterial infection
People who tend to get cavities or build up plaque
What is a root canal?
There’s no need to be worried if your dentist or endodontist prescribes a root canal procedure to treat a damaged or diseased tooth. Millions of teeth are treated and saved this way each year, relieving pain and making teeth healthy again.
